How to implement "favicon.ico" icon

Implement a bookmark graphic in just 3 easy steps....

Real estate agents: if your browser is IE 5 or greater (or any recent version of Netscape, Mozilla, or Opera), try this neat marketing trick.

First, bookmark this page and then look at your "Favorites" (or "Bookmarks" in Netscape).

You'll see a little icon that looks like a "blue two" with an arrow. And you'll also see the "little blue two" in your browser bar (where you type in web addresses.)

This little icon (favicon) makes this bookmark stand out from all the plain gray ones in your list. Plus, a little icon like this one helps to reinforce the company brand.

How favicon.ico works:

Most current browsers look for 'favicon.ico' in the root directory whenever they visit your site. With current IE versions, you have to bookmark the site to see the little graphic. With Netscape 7.0, Mozilla, and Opera browsers, the little icon appears in the address bar without any action on the part of the visitor.

How to make a little bookmark icon (favicon or favicon.ico):

First, make a little graphic: the exact size is 16x16 pixels: no bigger. This is quite small, so the graphic may not be nearly as pretty as your official company logo.

Second, save this graphic and call it "favicon.ico". Don't name it anything else! Only "favicon.ico" will do!

Lastly, upload your "favicon.ico" graphic to the root folder of your site.

That's it!

The next time someone bookmarks your page, the little bookmark icon will show up. It's that easy!
